Do Built-In Test Weights Make Calibration a Thing of the Past? No - and Here’s Why
Newer balances and scale often include internal test weights that can help reduce time spent on periodic testing with external weights. However, especially in regulated industries, internal weights and any subsequent adjustments cannot replace regular calibration services.
If you have recently purchased a balance or scale with internal test weights, congratulations! This feature should significantly reduce the downtime required for regular testing with external weights inside your organization and make everyday use easier for your operators.
However, this ability to adjust scale behavior based on temperature fluctuations or other factors does not replace the need for regular calibration. It may also be a good idea to continue to maintain a set of external test weights at your facility to periodically verify adjustments.
With some limitations, the use of built-in weights to test balance performance is commensurate with external sensitivity testing. However, built-in weights are not traceable to national or international standards. This means their presence and use cannot substitute for a traceable calibration procedure.
A regular calibration procedure, in addition to defining balance behavior, will document measurement uncertainty. This makes scheduled calibration performed by a certified service technician a must to maintain accuracy and regulatory compliance.
